Abstract: In the Evolution of Civilizations and Tragedy and Hope, Carroll Quigley, a famous American historian, finds a historical analytical tool which emphasizes the relations among man, culture and environment but centered on instrument of expansion and its institutionalization, In such terms, Quigley explains the rise and decline of civilizations and refines the process into seven stages, i.e. mixture, gestation, expansion, conflict, universal empire and invasion. Taking his analyses on Western civilization as an example, this article tries to draw the outline of Quigley's quintessential viewpoints on civilizations and summarize his success and failure.
